The Permanent Committee for Urban Development, Infrastructure, & Environment Discusses the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Pivotal Sectors of the Emirate ​

The permanent committee for urban development, infrastructure, & environment discussed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the pivotal sectors of the Emirate, including the public transport sector, whereby it presented all the consequences that have arisen as a result of the pandemic, which have caused a reduction in the traffic movement of vehicles, along with the application of the telecommuting system, in addition to the reduction of operational processes in industrial activities.

 

H.E. Abdul Rahman Mohammed Al Nuaimi, the Committee’s Chairman and the General-Director of the Department of Municipality & Planning in Ajman, confirmed that all entities have intensified their efforts during the pandemic and worked hard to achieve positive results and to transfer challenges into opportunities and successes, and that they were able to find qualitative solutions and they are still looking forward to achieve the best and develop what has been completed under the present situation.

 

The meeting presented the positive effects that have arisen due to the factors of lockdown over the past period, including the increase of the percentage of recycled solid waste and the increase of the percentage of good-reading days of air quality, as well as the improvement of the quality of sewage water. Furthermore, the committee discussed some of the negative effects, taking form in the reduction of the working period of economic entities and the suspension of the operation of some entities, a thing which has adversely affected associated projects in the total greenery index and other various projects in all fields.

 

The committee recommended the development of public transport systems to reduce the use of vehicles, and the development of policies for supporting the use of environmental vehicles that limit environmental pollution and that contribute to the preservation of air quality and hence, the preservation of the quality of life and the protection of the health and safety of individuals.

 

In the field of telecommuting and distance learning, the committee recommended to support the application of the system, to enhance working staff, to provide all enablers for success, to ensure production in high efficiency, and to achieve results that exceed expectations.

 

The committee focused on the necessity for the development of policies and legislations for the regulation of the transport plan within the Emirate and to prepare letters for the provision of data from some governmental entities, which include pivotal indicators that would contribute to the attainment of the desired objectives.
