The Power of Knowledge Session Launched Under the Title: “Intellectual Property and Innovation”

The second round of the Power of Knowledge session was launched under the title “Intellectual Property and Innovation” on 9 December at Ajman Center X.

 His Excellency Abdulrahman Al Nuaimi, Director General of the Municipality and Planning Department, Major General Dr. Abdul Quddus Al Obaidly, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Intellectual Property Association, and His Excellency Thabet Al Tarifi, Director General of Sharjah Municipality participated in the event. Her Highness Sheikha Noora Al Nuaimi, Director of Ajman X and the CEO of the Future Series, opened the session and praised the efforts being made to identify the foundations of intellectual property and reinforce its economic role in the UAE to help develop a true economy that encourages innovation and building a better future.


The session was held in collaboration with the Emirates Intellectual Property Association and sought to help achieve several objectives, mainly transforming Emirati society from knowledge consumers to knowledge producers in preparation for a data-based future.

The session included various presentations, starting with that of Major General Dr. Al Obaidly who spoke about the importance of intellectual property and its role in reinforcing the national economy. He was followed by Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Al Bakr, Legal Affairs Consultant at the Federal Customs Authority  and Dr. Abdulrahman Al Moaini who gave presentations about intellectual property from the view point of UAE laws and international treaties concerning inspections and customs control for counterfeit goods, as well as the role of civil society organizations in spreading awareness and protecting intellectual property rights.

The presentations we followed by a discussion panel titled “Intellectual Property-Challenges and Solutions”. It was moderated by Mariam Al Hamadi, a member of Ajman X, and included expert guests with experience and competence in various fields relating to intellectual property and innovation. The panel started with Eng. Mohammed Al Shamisi, CEO of RoboHiTech, presenting his robot and talking about his experience as the first Emirati expert in the field of robotics.   Mr. Malek Hannouf, Director of Trademark Protection at Louis Vuitton MENA and Chairman of the Brand Owners’ Protection Group was among the panel participants.  Lt Col Gaith Al Kaabi, Head of Al Nuaimiyah Police Station, discussed the role the Ajman Police leadership plays in combatting counterfeit goods and commercial fraud cases, then Economic Expert Ahmed Al Turbak discussed the complementary role played by the Department of Economic Development – Ajman in this regard. The discussion was enthusiastic and included interactive interventions from the audience. It concluded with the following recommendations:  

  1. Establish a unified central umbrella entity concerned with intellectual property, with institutional and financial capacities
  2. Restructure intellectual property procedures and their monetary fees
  3. Reinforce penalties and judgements and reduce fines for violators
  4. Identify ways to control digital commerce
  5. Include educational materials on intellectual property in school and university curricula
  6. Increase awareness around intellectual property for both consumers and traders (brand owners)

At the end of the session, Al Nuaimi thanked the speakers, partners and organizers for their work.
