A First for a Department in the Emirate

12 November 2018

The Municipality and Planning Department in Ajman executed a business continuity exercise that consisted of a drill evacuation of its buildings in case of an emergency that hinders daily activities. By doing so, the Department is the first government entity in the Emirate to complete such an exercise and be able to continue providing its services through an alternative center.

His Excellency Abdulrahman Al Nuaimi, Director General of the Department and Chairman of the Business Continuity Committee, confirmed that the Municipality and Planning Department in Ajman forms part of the nation’s federal system and operates according to the wise government’s guidelines. Important initiatives are immediately implemented, including the business continuity exercise that seeks to save lives first and foremost. The exercise also guarantees the continuity of business and that services provided to the Emirate’s public are not interrupted as required by the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority.

His Excellency added that employees responded positively to the initiative and were made aware of the steps they would need to take in the event of an emergency. They were further informed of gathering points and evacuation stages. The Department’s alternative service center was activated within half an hour only.

Rashid Ahmed Bani Hashim, Director of Business Continuity and Director of Corporate Communication & Marketing at the Department, explained that the Department was working according to the direct instructions of H.H. Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid, Chairman of the Municipality and Planning Department in Ajman. These guidelines seek to guarantee that services continue to be provided to the public regardless of circumstances. They aim to set plans and alternative scenarios for emergencies while completely safeguarding the lives of employees and customers.

The Director of Business Continuity noted that the exercise was made up of several stages. First, the customer building was evacuated, then damages were assessed and a decision was made to activate the business continuity plan. During this time, leaders were moved to the control room, services at the alternative center were activated, and recovery efforts were launched at the customer building. He added that the work team will ensure that exercises are completed and that employees are completely aware of the necessary measures to take.
